Healthy Hair is Hydrated Hair

Proper hydration is essential to achieving and maintaining healthy hair, but hydration alone will not and cannot hydrate your hair. There are many aspects involved with ensuring your hair is retaining the water and moisture that it needs. Whatever your hair type or texture your hair needs hydration.

Dehydrated Hair

What happens when the hair has not properly retained hydration? When the hair is not properly hydrated, the hair will experience problems such as: dryness, frizz, breakage, split ends and hair loss. To properly hydrate your hair you need to first start with choosing the right products for your hair. Ensure the products you purchase contain ingredients that will add hydration and moisture to not only your hair, but also your scalp.

Start by using a hydrating shampoo that contains natural ingredients like Aloe Vera, Glycerin and oils such as Coconut, Argan and Almond. Shampoo should cleanse without stripping away natural oils and should leave the hair with humectants to lock and seal in water content. You should shampoo in moderation. Frequently washing can cause dryness. If you are experiencing dryness, you should use a shampoo specifically for dry hair and for no other hair conditions such as oily hair, as these shampoos are designed to reduce oil and will further irritate the scalp by causing dryness.

Be very generous when conditioning because conditioner is what thoroughly hydrates the hair. If you are avoiding wash day, you can simply rinse with lukewarm water to rid the hair and scalp of product buildup and follow up with a conditioner. Applying a hair mask should be a part of your hair care routine as deep conditioning treatments are effective at repairing hair damage. You should deep condition or use a mask at least once weekly. Make sure to use a leave-in conditioner for additional hydration, this should consist of a liquid, oil and cream.

Aloe Vera is a great liquid that can be sprayed on the hair and scalp for hydration and can even promote hair growth and protect the hair from the sun. Vitamin E oil is a favorite as it contains proteins that strengthen and nourish the hair especially when combined with other oils like Coconut, Almond and Argan that prevent breakage.

Disclaimer: If you have nut allergies, skip the oils that contain nuts and use Glycerin and Vitamin E instead.

The most important of all is drinking more water. Increasing your water intake ensures that the body is hydrated and maintains a cool temperature from within, this is especially important in hot weather. When in hot temperatures and dehydrated, the body is depleted of water which can lead to dry hair.
